Aim of the project

Establish a presentation and processing system for precipitation data provided by a dual polarized X-band Doppler radar in the region of Aachen.

Description

It is the aim of this installation to provide municipal utilities and service companies in the Aachen area with processed real-time precipitation data with high spatial resolution. By means of dual polarization it will be possible to identify and evaluate different kinds of precipitation (rain, hail, snow etc.).

The exact added value and the advantages of using such data for municipal users shall be determined and optimized within a trial period.

Subsequently it is planned to establish a product suite, consisting of radar, processing and analysis software, linkage to local municipal users and utilities, including computing capacities. This suite shall be offered to other municipalities as a bundle option at fixed price. It shall be designed in such a way that only small modifications with regards to the municipal infrastructure and the radar setup, considering the terrain relief, will be necessary. Thus, further municipalities can set up individual data packages for their specific needs.

After demonstration of the system’s performance capabilities in the region of Aachen, further applications shall be developed and tested. Cooperation with the municipalities and political decision-makers shall be maintained within this process.

Marketing approaches shall be broad-based with a special focus on licence fees for data usage.
